WE ARE MEANT TO CONNECT, TO LOVE

This short documentary is a compelling walk through the neighborhood of Chris Dean, in South Memphis. Produced by filmmaker Alan Spearman, it is an intimate look at an environment of great endurance, and a passion and purpose born from suffering.
Chris' heart stopped when he was just two years old, and he came back to life again. When he was 5 years old, his father was shot multiple times and killed. At 18, he gained attention throughout the US when he introduced Barrack Obama to his high school. His philosophy has become an inspiration to many.
He asks you to consider your dreams and your nightmares, to ask yourself when times are hard, whether it is better not to be born, or to be born into a brilliant nightmare? He tells us that we have choices to make, and that we had better make them wisely. That we should find something to love.
Would a close call with death get us to ask the question of ourselves, do we believe in a higher power, something greater than ourselves? Do you have a higher purpose, and can you make one? Can you see this crazy life as a meaningful journey?
In AS I AM, the conclusion is clear as day... and despite all of our differences, all of our individual struggles and hardships, whatever form they take, we are here to connect – to feel each other – to love.
Perhaps this is the highest of meanings? That wherever we are from, and whatever conditions we are in, we have to love each other. It is this that will create a better world.
Ask yourself, how would you feel if you had come back from the dead, and had a second chance at life? Would you do things differently? Would you live a life of connection and love, of purpose and understanding? This is what AS I AM encourages us to consider.
