TERRENCE MCKENNA - AN UNCONVENTIONAL MIND

Terrence Mckenna is a leading thinker of New Age ideas. An author and self-proclaimed psychonaut, Mckenna had many ideas concerning the psyche, consciousness, and altered states.

Opinions differ on Mckenna. Is he a trippy hippie or a genius? However you choose to think of Terrence McKenna, it’s clear that his message is an ancient unabridged truth liberated from time, revealing our physical and spiritual existence as it has been, and as it may yet be.

His message is basically one of liberation of consciousness.

The Shackles Of The Mind

So what, according to Mckenna, are the shackles that keep us bound? Society, or more specifically the cultural conditioning that keeps us in a state of mind that prevents us from seeing, or even seeking the higher truths, and asking questions about our existence or spiritual essence.

He saw through the vale of modern society and cultural structures. He reasoned that through our ability to evolve to a state of higher consciousness, we can liberate ourselves from the (dis)order of religion and political and social definitions that suppress our spiritual acuity.

Mckenna says, “We are caged by our cultural programming. Culture is mass hallucination, and when you step outside of it you see it for what it is.”

The problem is, we are told what to think and what to believe from a very young age. By the time we come to think critically, we have to battle through layers of conditioning to reveal anything truly meaningful.

Rising Above

Only when we step outside of these bounds, these desires and conflicts and competitive games that riddle our psyche, will we find the lasting solutions to the world’s problems.

These solutions would reverberate universally to every living being on this planet, for future generations to come. Vibrationally and spiritually, we can rise above our current state. We do not have to literally step outside of society and become hermits to understand this. Terrence Mckenna encourages us to take control of our own life, and our own mind.

“Life is like a novel, and if you're not the hero of that novel, then what kind of novel is it? You need to do some serious editing.”

The world that we live in can leave us feeling pretty beaten up sometimes. We feel like we have no power to make changes, and no power to know ourselves outside of our work life.

We should be the hero of our own stories, and yet often we feel like the victim.

So what are we supposed to do? According to Mckenna, the answer is to explore.

“You are an explorer... and the greatest good you can do is to bring back a new idea... our world is in crisis because of the absence of good ideas. Our world is in crisis because of an absence of consciousness.”

Exploration Of Consciousness

As divine beings, Mckenna believes that it is our responsibility to come to understand ourselves and the universe better, and to explore consciousness.

“If the words 'life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness don't include the right to experiment on your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independance isn't worth the hemp it is written on”

According to Mckenna, we are not encouraged by society to pursue and deepen our understanding of consciousness. In fact, he observed, so little are we to be trusted exploring our own mind's, that some methods of exploration are even banned.

According to Mckenna, the reason psychedelic plants are banned is not because our government is trying to protect us from harm, but because “they dissolve opinion structures... and open you up to the possibility that everything you know is wrong.”

Of course, there are many ways to expand and explore consciousness. Meditation and yoga will never be made illegal, as the law enforcement agencies would have to try to enforce a rule against people breathing.

We have the right, and we also have a responsibility, to explore our consciousness, and to ask questions as to where we come from, and indeed, where we are heading.

Divinity & Subjectivity

The idea in any respect, and regardless of whether one chooses to use plant-based ethneogens in the process, is to awaken oneself to the divinity within, and also to a subjective understanding of the world that is beyond the cultural conditioning long forced upon us. This is how we break out of the trap, and start to think for ourselves. Mckenna says:

“The only understanding that will be useful to you, is your own understanding...“Nobody is smarter than you are”

The individual quest for a greater truth, and a greater understanding of the nature of consciousness, is what will catalyze our collective journey. We are all a piece of this puzzle, and when we know this we can find our place in the jigsaw of life.

Through our individual quest to understand ourselves and the universe, we also help the collective journey to move forward. We are a component of the whole, and when we act we bring others with us.

Without something changing within our social and political psyche, we are on a one-way road to destruction. “Business as usual is a death sentence now", says Mckenna.

So this is a call to action, for anyone who agrees with these ideas, stand up and begin exploring. Step outside what you have been told, and learn how to understand the greater truths from your own beautiful and unique perspective.

As current generations seek to move beyond the limitations of "order" set by religion and political design, more brilliant minds like McKenna’s will be discovered, new ideas will come to the surface, and people will be inspired to explore.

Hope resides in liberating the spirit from religion and social rituals that distract and limit the mind.
